Intake Manifold Cleaning Warrnambool

Is your diesel running a bit sluggish?
Have you noticed black exhaust smoke?
Is your diesel losing fuel efficiency?

These problems can point to a blocked or restricted intake manifold

Over time, diesel engines build up carbon deposits inside the intake manifold. This is especially common in modern engines with EGR systems.

If left unchecked, this buildup restricts airflow, reduces performance, and can lead to serious engine issues. At Lowes Auto Repairs, we carry out thorough intake manifold cleaning to restore power, efficiency, and reliability.

Why Carbon Builds Up in Diesel Engines

Carbon buildup is a normal by-product of diesel combustion, made worse by:

  • EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) systems
  • Short trips and stop-start driving
  • Low engine load driving
  • Poor fuel quality

Over time, soot and oil vapour combine to form thick deposits inside the intake system.

What Happens When It’s Not Cleaned

A blocked intake manifold can cause:

  • Loss of power
  • Increased fuel consumption
  • Rough running or hesitation
  • Excessive smoke
  • Turbo inefficiency
  • Engine warning lights

In severe cases, airflow can be restricted so badly that the engine struggles to breathe properly.

The Importance of Cleaning Your Intake Manifold

Cleaning the intake system restores proper airflow and allows the engine to operate as designed.

Benefits include:

  • Improved power and throttle response
  • Better fuel efficiency
  • Smoother engine operation
  • Reduced smoke emissions
  • Improved turbo performance

👉 Simply put — your engine can breathe again.

Our Cleaning Process

At Lowes Auto Repairs, we don’t just “spray and hope” — we do it properly.

1. Inspection & Diagnosis

We assess the level of carbon buildup and identify any related issues.

2. Intake Removal

The intake manifold is removed to allow full access — this ensures a proper clean, not a surface fix.

3. Carbon Removal

We manually clean heavy deposits using specialised tools and cleaning agents to remove all built-up carbon.

4. Component Check

We inspect components such as EGR valves and sensors while everything is accessible.

5. Reassembly & Testing

Everything is reassembled correctly and the vehicle is thoroughly tested to ensure performance is restored.

If required, we also carry out an on-car chemical clean with our BG intake system cleaner as shown in the above video link to remove any remaining carbon deposits within the cylinder head intake ports and combustion chambers, this also cleans the pistons and rings and improve overall results, raising compression and increasing power which in turn improves fuel economy. If needed, we can also carry out a fuel system clean using a similar BG tool setup.

Vehicles We Commonly See This On

  • Toyota Landcruiser (79 & 200 Series)
  • Toyota Hilux
  • Ford Ranger
  • Mitsubishi Triton
  • Isuzu D-Max
  • Holden Rodeo & Colorado

👉 Especially vehicles used for short trips or towing.

When Should You Get It Done?

Signs you may need an intake clean:

  • Vehicle feels sluggish
  • Increased fuel consumption
  • Excess smoke
  • Rough idle

As a general guide, many diesel engines benefit from inspection and cleaning every 80,000–150,000 km, depending on use.
